A Journey into Biofield Tuning: Sound, Memory & Healing
Imagine tuning your body like an instrument – clearing trauma, stress and dissonance with the simple resonance of sound. This is the promise of Biofield Tuning, a sound therapy modality developed by visionary researcher and sound healing pioneer Eileen McKusick.
What is Biofield Tuning?
Originally trained as a massage therapist, Eileen began incorporating tuning forks into her sessions— and had serendipitous results. Clients began responding more profoundly to the tuning forks than to traditional bodywork.
Over time, she noticed patterns: emotions stored in specific regions of the body seemed to consistently respond to certain frequencies. Her curiosity led to a Ph.D. in Integral Health and two groundbreaking books on the subject. Through decades of deep listening and thousands of client sessions, Eileen developed a theory of Tuning the Biofield, also the name of her first book.
The biofield is an electromagnetic field that surrounds and interpenetrates the human body. This field, also known as the auric field or even the akashic record, holds the vibrational memory of our life experiences. It holds our inner state and directs how we perceive and react to the world. Epigenetics and somatic psychology also explore how trauma and memory are stored throughout the nervous system and fascia.
The Biofield acts like a plasmic membrane, similar to the Earth’s ionosphere, which buffers and regulates the flow of electrical energy. Both the Earth and the human energy field follow a toroidal flow pattern – energy spiraling out, cascading in a bubble all around the body and then looping back through a central axis.
Analogous to a battery, each organ and cell carries its own electrical charges, with the chakras tending to hold a slightly stronger charge. The heart, for example, emits a field measurable up to 3 feet away using an ECG.
Grounded in biophysics, subtle energy anatomy, and decades of careful, client-based observation, biofield tuning uses tuning forks to locate areas of dissonance in the energy field – often related to stored stress, trauma, or emotional patterning.
What a Session Looks Like
As a Biofield Tuning practitioner, my role is to help harmonize and balance this field using sound and vibration.
Each session begins by opening the Biofield, making it more receptive to frequency. I work from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head, calibrating the body’s current before engaging the negative terminal (Earth Star) and positive terminal (Sun Star). These energetic poles just below the feet and above the head form the top and bottom of the toroidal field of energy that surrounds the body.
Using a pendulum, I assess the flow of energy through the chakras and the larger field. The pendulum helps objectively identify where the system most wants attention, as pain in a certain body part might be referred from stored energy elsewhere.
From there, I begin combing the field from its outer edge about five feet from the body, moving inward through the person’s entire timeline, from pre-conception to present-day patterns. As the tuning fork moves through the Biofield, what once felt blocked or fragmented begins to reorganize itself into coherence. Often, this energetic release is mirrored in subtle movements, sensations, or even visions—both for the practitioner and the person on the table.
A client from Canada said this of his over-the-phone session:
“I was genuinely amazed at how transformative it was, especially given that it was a remote session. I could very clearly feel dense energies shift and release from my body through the process. After the session I felt so much more clear and embodied, where my wife noticed immediately that something had shifted.”
One of the most consistent themes I encounter is energy stored around the moment of birth. The transition from source consciousness into embodied life is profound—and often jarring. Being born via cesarean, prematurely, or into a clinical setting with bright fluorescent lights can leave energetic imprints that linger for decades. These early disruptions can manifest in surprising ways— such as sensitivity to cold, attachment challenges, or a persistent feeling of not being fully grounded in the body.
In a remote treatment with someone from the UK, there was density on both sides of the root chakra immediately as I was entering the Biofield, and it took quite some time to clear. It was unusual for me to encounter a block of this particular pattern. It turned out that her parents took seven years before they were able to conceive!
How Biofield Tuning Works: The Intelligence of Sound
One of the things I love most about Biofield Tuning is that it doesn’t require revisiting the ways trauma manifests through storytelling. We don’t need to know the details of what happened. As the tuning forks move through the field, the sound itself finds and interacts with areas of dissonance, like a bat navigating with echolocation.
A clear chime or felt sense within the body indicates coherence. A muddled, dense, or chaotic sound signals a disruption in the field. When this happens, I pause and check in with the client. Often, they’ll notice a physical sensation, emotion, or memory surfacing. This allows us to work together intuitively to restore harmony.
The tuning forks, acting as a navigational tool and harmonizing instrument, help clear energetic congestion until the sound becomes coherent again and I feel the release of dense energy within the field.
Feedback from an elder describing the session:
“The next day after the session, I experienced a lengthy and powerful emotional release. It felt like it was a full body clearing of burdens of spells, vows, guilt and grief. Somehow, my ancestral woundings are being healed. As of now my relationships are lightening up and I have more clarity.”
The tuning forks are also a powerful tool for emotional regulation. For example, anxiety often responds well to binaural beats, two slightly different frequencies played in each ear creating a calming third frequency. Placing the 54.81 Hz and 62.64 Hz tuning forks at either side creates a 7.83 Hz frequency between, which entrains the brain to the Schumann Resonance, the Earth’s natural electromagnetic pulse. This frequency has a calming, grounding effect and helps the body return to a parasympathetic state.
Integrating Other Modalities & Grounding with Water and Nature
In my practice, I’ve also begun integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, especially acupuncture points and meridians, into the tuning process. This adds a powerful dimension for clients dealing with specific concerns such as emotional or physical challenges.
I can also use a monochord over one’s torso, allowing the repetitive strumming of the single-chord instrument to directly ripple into the body like a sonic, resonant massage. This ancient instrument was developed by Pythagoras who realized that certain ratios and harmonics had incredible healing effects.
The monochord can help release deeply-rooted stress and support nervous system regulation.
Harmonic Reconnection & Aftercare
After a Biofield tuning session, it’s suggested to ground the work by taking an Epsom salt bath or ocean swim, drinking plenty of water, and spending time in nature if possible.
These simple practices help integrate the vibrational shifts and allow the body to fully receive the benefits of the tuning.
Healing is often seen as a complex journey, but sometimes it’s simply about tuning in and listening deeply to the body’s inner wisdom. Biofield Tuning invites us to step into a space where sound becomes a bridge to reconnect us to our natural harmony.
It reminds us that deep transformation can arise from gentle resonance and openness, and in the quiet space between vibration and stillness, profound healing can unfold.
