The following May 2022 astrology + energy report comes from Business Coach + Earth Medicine Practitioner, Ariana Fotinakis
We kick May off right in the midst of eclipse season, still riding the energy of April 30th’s new moon and partial solar eclipse in the sign of Taurus. There is a lot of big energy moving this month—a theme you’ve perhaps noticed for 2022—however, not to worry: when you understand the energies, you can work with them and not against them. Read on to learn about the key astrological and lunar dates for May 2022, as well as a series of journal prompts to help you reflect on what may arise for you.
The Moon
Eclipses always happen in pairs, with a new moon solar eclipse happening first and the full moon lunar eclipse happening approximately two weeks later. During this time—referred to as “eclipse season” by those in the astrological community—we can experience rapid shifts and unexpected plot twists. It’s not a time for practicing moon magic; many astrologers advise against engaging in your regular moon rituals because the energy is not conducive to manifestation and completion of your typical cycles.
Instead, what this cosmic witch suggests is to find practices and rituals that support your nervous system. Connect to the physical boundaries of your body to stay aware of where you begin and end, and where the external world begins and ends. Use long, slow deep breathing to calm your nervous system in heightened moments. Connect to Mama Earth by putting your hands or feet in the soil or even going for an icy cold plunge.
These embodiment practices will support you in staying regulated during the energy of eclipse season which can, at times, feel chaotic.
On May 15, we have a full moon total lunar eclipse happening in the sign of Scorpio. Scorpio is intense, mysterious, and deeply connected to our emotional and shadow selves. During this time, you may notice an amplification of your emotional landscape—feelings that have been ignored may ask to be acknowledged. Use your tools and, as long as it feels safe to do so, allow yourself to simply be with whatever comes up. Remember: there is nothing to do, nothing to fix. This full moon eclipse simply asks you to surrender and ride it out.
On May 30, we have a new moon in the sign of sociable Gemini. Eclipse season will officially be over, and while you may still be feeling some of the leftover effects of the energies, generally speaking, it’s back to business-as-usual when it comes to moon magic. While new moons are often a time of inward reflection, Gemini brings an air of connection and conversation. Consider gathering with friends to debrief on eclipse season, set intentions for the upcoming lunar cycle, and honour the dark moon. Ceremonial cacao optional but highly recommended.
The Cosmos
On May 10, Mercury stations retrograde in the sign of Gemini. By now, we all know that when Mercury is retrograde we are more susceptible to communication errors, technological mishaps, and plans that go awry. Gemini has the tendency to be a little scattered and flighty at times, so when Mercury is retrograde in this sign it’s an invitation to quadruple check that you’ve dotted your i’s and crossed your t’s. Mercury, still retrograde, will enter the sign of Taurus on May 22 which may feel as though things have slowed to a complete halt. This can be very sticky energy to navigate; consider holding off on making big commitments and decisions until Mercury stations direct on June 2.
Also happening on May 10, Jupiter enters the sign of Aries. Jupiter has spent and will continue to spend much of 2022 in Pisces, however it’s having its first dip into the sign of Aries. Jupiter is all about luck & abundance, and when it’s in the sign of Aries, it’s asking us to tap into our “I got this” energy & to remember the divine power of creation that lives within each and every one of us. Manifestation is a dance between taking the action & surrendering, showing up to meet the Universe halfway. This is the time for taking action.
On May 20, the sun moves into the sign of Gemini. This is the time to play! Be social, make more plans than you can reasonably commit to, and connect with friends both new and old. Sometimes life feels hard and sometimes it actually is hard; collectively, we’ve been through a lot the last couple of years and it can feel as though the inner work is never-ending. Gemini asks us to remember that experiencing joy is an important part of the work, so get out there and make the world your playground for the next four weeks.
Integrate the Energies: Mercury Retrograde Journal Prompts
If you are feeling resistance towards the slowing down than Mercury retrograde asks of us, consider spending some time in self-reflection with the following prompts to unpack that.
- What is my relationship to “slowing down”?
- What is my first memory of being in a rush?
- Is the urgency I’m experiencing my own, or does it belong to someone else?
- What do I believe will happen if I don’t make moves immediately?
- Do I know for certain this will be true? Are there other possible outcomes? If so, what are they?
- What does the part of me that’s experiencing urgency need in order to remember it’s safe to slow down?
