If you’re drawn to the idea of energy healing and harnessing your life force energy, and believe that there are powers at work that can’t always be detected by the eye, Reiki may provide the holistic support you need on your journey. For those of you ready explore the ways Reiki can be used to support your life by providing energetic protection and healing, we’ve put together the following article just for you.

What is Reiki?

A form of hands-on energy healing that originated in Japan, Reiki is the practice of harnessing universal life force energy energy, (called chi or qi) to heal physical and mental trauma, support mental clarity, and promote spiritual well-being. The assumption in Reiki is that universal or life force energy flows through everything that is alive- including humans, animals and plants- and can be channelled -through those attuned- to promote healing.

Reiki requires the initiation and attunement of a practitioner to focus this energy for treatment, healing and many other purposes in an effective and knowledgeable way. In Reiki, the belief is that everyone has the Universal life force energy within: this energy is believed to be the divine spark that inhabits all life forms.

Reiki is life force energy

Reiki is channelled through the practitioner’s crown chakra down the meridians of the energy body and out through the palm chakras.  Reiki only manifests as a positive energy force and can never be used to cause harm.  Reiki energy is life force energy and conducts itself intelligently, flowing into vital organs and wounded areas of the physical body where it is needed most urgently.

Reiki may also be focused directly into the emotional body to treat traumas and residual hardened energy patterns. Reiki can be used to energize, revitalize and support the psychological system in order to promote optimum healing and reinforcement on that level.

For this reason, as a treatment, Reiki serves extraordinarily well as a compliment to talk therapies and other healing modalities. I recommend Reiki for my students who are often involved in other emotional clearing work in another healing modality.

What I love about Reiki is that the practitioner benefits from directed self-healing AND from treating others.  In fact, the power of Reiki for self-healing is one of the most common reasons people seek to become an attuned Reiki practitioner in the first place. As you learn to practice Reiki on yourself you learn to harness your own life force energy.

How is Reiki Used for Healing?

Reiki can be used to energetically protect yourself or others, or even to energetically cleanse or protect property – like a vehicle or a computer.  Reiki can be used to promote health and wellness in plants and animals, as well as humans.  There are Reiki practitioners who focus specifically on animal treatment to support the optimal flow of life force energy in their pets. The uses for Reiki are limited only by the practitioner’s imagination.

Holistic Treatement

For all these reasons Reiki is most often classified as a holistic treatment and as such is being brought into mainstream medicine in hospitals and hospice work.  It is also recognized as a particularly effective enhancement in the field of massage therapy.  Many Veterinarians are supplementing their treatments with Reiki by bringing in specialized Reiki practitioners.

For all these wonderful uses it should be carefully noted that Reiki is not to be considered a replacement for treatment by your personal physician or any medical professionals your doctor refers you to.
