The concept of vibrational healing, which is often used interchangeably with frequency healing, is rooted in the idea that different frequencies of electromagnetic waves or sound can have therapeutic effects on the body and mind.

Much like when you play one string on a guitar and another string starts to vibrate or when the heartbeats of people sharing an experience together begin to synch up, the practice of breathwork can help to bring lower vibrational energies in the body into resonance (harmony) with the higher state of our breath, aka our Life Force.

Vibrational or frequency healing can involve the use of sound, light, electromagnetic fields, or other vibrational modalities – like Breathwork and Meditation- to affect the body on a cellular level, which is why even Einstein is quoted as saying: “the medicine of the future will be frequency medicine.”

The foundation for vibrational healing is rooted in the principal of entrainment, which refers to the tendency of two or more rhythmic systems to synchronize when they are near each other. This phenomenon can be observed in various contexts such as the synchronization of pendulum clocks, the alignment of menstrual cycles among women living together, or the synchronization of heartbeats among people in close proximity- noted above!

With sound healing, certain sound frequencies have been found to demonstrate healing qualities that are able to settle the mind and the body. Certain rhythms, when repeated to the listener, can actually slow one’s breathing and heart rate through the same principle of entrainment described above.

With sound healing, brainwave entrainment happens when external stimuli, such as audio tones or beats, synchronize brainwaves with specific frequencies. This is believed to have the potential benefits of relaxation, stress reduction, and cognitive enhancement. And a more concrete example of this is the way ultrasound therapy utilizes high-frequency sound waves for therapeutic purposes like promoting tissue healing.

In a similar way, meditation has been shown to impact our brainwaves and state of consciousness: several studies of advanced meditators reveal that meditation increases our theta or alpha brainwave activity, which is associated with higher states of consciousness.

Many applications of frequency healing are currently being explored, and  I personally believe (like Einstein!) that the realm of vibrational healing will transform the way we understand all healing in the next 10 to 20 years.

So, back to breathwork…

Breathwork as Vibrational Medicine.

Given what we know about entrainment, much of what tends to be held as denser energy in the body (which we feel as emotions such as depression, anger, anxiety, or fear) is actually subconscious.

In a breathwork practice, as we create a current of breath within the body for an extended period of time, our breath itself helps to excavate denser energies/emotions that are being carried in the body. As Breathwork Teacher Trainer Carmen Ganne once taught me: ‘Through entrainment, lower densities calibrate towards and come into harmony with the higher vibrational state of the breath. But, because energy cannot be created or destroyed, we aren’t technically ‘letting go’ of emotions like fear or anger in breathwork: We’re actually transmuting them into other states- like acceptance, acknowledgement, and love.’

The current of breath that we activate in a connected breathwork practice allows us to free the subconscious emotional patterns of tension, anxiety, fear, and even traumas that we may be carrying at a cellular level in the body. It’s actually called breath therapy by many practitioners because breathwork is such a powerful form of somatic processing, and you can feel the benefits and shifts immediately. While the research on breathwork tends to speak to the physical breathwork benefits (reducing anxiety, boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation, promoting better sleep, etc.), breathwork as a vibrational modality offers even more: It gives us the capacity to create powerful physical, emotional, energetic and vibrational shifts in our lives.
