Winter Solstice Yoga Retreat: Connect to Source

The Winter Solstice pulls us to the source. The darkness draws us under until the depth feels like its own illumination, a radiance that stands still and tethers us to the unknown—the great mystery. When we sense this constant inner light amidst the outer cycles of illumination and reflection, we realize we can always return to the conversation at the center of our lives.

Join Tess and a sangha of bright lights this Winter Solstice and retreat within—together we will investigate:
—How we connect to source. In our culture, it can be easy to substitute interpretation for the source itself. We have to consciously take in many voices in an attempt to find the strings of truth, the chords that bind. We have to interpret the metaphors in texts written thousands of years ago to support current circumstances. We have to get beyond the limitations of words and allow for silence—there is a great symphony within awaiting our attention.
—How our practice can become postured, especially when we are experiencing loss or disconnection in the dark days. How do we bolster our well being so we become the shapers of our stories?
—The importance of feeling—and then feeling some more. If grief or loss are alive in our bodies, can we allow that heaviness to ground us, feel it as energetic without needing to attach a storyline or judgment?
—How the practice can elevate us. Where is the point within the asana where the posture holds itself? How can the trajectory of the practice support us, open us to the point where we feel the inherent lift?
—Belly-down backbends. This family of poses connect us with the earth and our nabhi centers (belly buttons)—our first place of contact with our mothers, source of divine nourishment. It is through our connectedness to this core that we restore and replenish, return to our hearts—where hearts beat as one.
—Other backbends. Backbends (especially those with our hearts drawing upward) elevate the spirit, open the heart and chest, and direct the mind outwards. They help restore dis-ease due to the retention of or inability to express strong emotions, especially anger. During the holidays (holy days), they are invaluable for cultivating whole heartedness.
