The word ‘solstice’ translates to ‘Sun stands still’. Each day this month is leading to the Summer Solstice, when the Sun rises higher in the sky until it reaches its potent peak and for 3 days appears to stand still in the sky before it very minimally starts to make its descent down to its lowest point 6 months later at Winter Solstice. Solstice is a time to honor these polarities of the earth, and within ourselves.
As the Sun rises to its pinnacle at the Summer Solstice we may find we have more energy and feel more social and outward, spending more time playing in nature. As the Sun moves through its waning phase at the Winter Solstice we may find we are more internal and slow moving, needing more time for rest and staying cozy inside.
Solstice is a time to really honour our own natural rhythms, and remember that we are always moving through our own seasons within. As we are being initiated into a new season, the question to ask is: what is initiating in you?
